Assistant Professor – Anthropology

Job Description

Assistant Professor – Anthropology – (FAC002043)
Organization: H0121 Comparative Cultural Studies
Salary Commensurate with experience

Description:

The Department of Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Houston invites applications from outstanding scholars and teachers with an active agenda of research and publication in anthropology or any area of cultural studies related to anthropology. We will be hiring faculty for an appointment at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology.

Thematic and geographical areas of research focus are open, but there is some preference for scholars working on one or more of the following topics, to complement existing research strengths: race & racism, migration & citizenship, gender & sexuality, food, agriculture, religion, medical anthropology, digital humanities, media anthropology, environmental anthropology, labor, or global political economy.

The Department of Comparative Cultural Studies (CCS) at the University of Houston is an interdisciplinary department that is home to curricular programs in Anthropology, Liberal Studies, and Religious Studies. We seek new colleagues whose academic work would enhance and amplify the intellectual synergies that already exist across the department and in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS). New faculty will serve anthropology undergraduates and graduate students in CCS’s MA degree program in anthropology, as well as other students in our College. For further insight into the range of thematic and topical interests we cover, and our distinct constitutive programs, applicants are encouraged to review the departmental website: https://www.uh.edu/class/ccs/

Applications should include: 1) a cover letter, including statement of research agenda and teaching experience; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) the names and contact information of three academic references; 4) two article- or chapter-length writing samples; 5) a sample course syllabus.

The University of Houston, with one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States, seeks to recruit and retain a diverse community of scholars. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity. Individuals with a history of and commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department is seeking outstanding candidates with the potential for exceptional research, excellence in teaching, experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for disadvantaged students. We will prioritize candidates working in applied anthropology, broadly understood, with a demonstrable commitment to public engagement, ideally with relevance to the Houston metropolitan region, prospectively in one or more of the  following areas: social justice; environmental anthropology, climate change, and disaster; or medical anthropology.

The University of Houston is also responsive to the needs of dual career couples. The city of Houston and its surrounding communities offer a great quality of life with affordable living options. As a global city and the fourth largest in the US, there is a vibrant art and food scene, the largest medical center in the world, two major airports, beautiful public parks and extensive greenways along the bayous for running and cycling, Galveston Beach close by, and an exceptionally diverse population drawn from every part of the world.

The priority deadline for submission of applications is November 15, 2021.

The University of Houston is an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer. Minorities, women, veterans, and persons with disabilities are enthusiastically encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in anthropology or affiliated discipline or interdisciplinary field, or must provide evidence of anticipated completion of the Ph.D. and confirmation that it will have been awarded by June 2022. (Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon the selection of the final candidate).
