Department of Anthropology

College of Arts and Sciences

American University

The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for one full-time, tenure-line Professor position that will begin on September 1, 2018. We are seeking a linguistic and/or sociocultural anthropologist who focuses on development, climate change and environment, and/or food security/sovereignty. Applicants should have a PhD or an anticipated PhD completion by August 2018 in Anthropology.  Candidates should apply for either Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor rank. Depending on qualifications, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring.

We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to public engagement, the use of substantive social theory, and the application of rigorous qualitative and/or quantitative research methods in their research and scholarship. The successful candidate’s research will focus broadly on processes of development, climate and environmental change, and/or food security, sustainability, and sovereignty among communities and other social groups. More specific foci that are of interest within these broad areas include: internationalization and globalization; diaspora and displacement; health, community, and foodways; race, inequality, and resistance; postcolonial societies and perspectives; climate change, environmental ideology, and related social movements; and, local alternative economies. Candidates who take historical perspectives in their work will be looked upon favorably.

The successful candidate’s research will align explicitly with one or more of AU 2030’s foci on Human Security; Environmental Studies/Science and Sustainability; Global Economic and Financial Governance; Health, Risk and Society; and Latin American and Latino/Latina Studies. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate collaborative approaches in their research that will help our department strengthen its ties and influence across the university and its various relevant initiatives and centers (e.g., Center for Latin American and Latino Studies, Anti-Racist Research and Policy Center, and Center for Health, Risk, and Society). For this position, all regions of the world will be considered though we particularly welcome applicants whose work has South American and African foci and ties.

The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong teaching record, a successful and substantial history in obtaining external grant support for their work, and share the department’s commitment to collaboration among disciplines within anthropology and in other disciplines represented across the university. In addition to scholarship and teaching, responsibilities will include participation in department, school and university service. Applicants from historically underrepresented minority and identity groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Salary and benefits are competitive.  Review of applications will begin September 18, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit applications via https://apply.interfolio.com/43557. Include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, recent teaching evaluations (when possible), copies of recent published papers or working papers, and the names of three persons willing to provide letters of recommendation.  Please contact Jean Wogaman, Senior Administrative Assistant at 202-885-1838 if you have any questions.
