Special 10th Anniversary Issue. Contentious actors, spaces and themes in present and future societies.

The 10th anniversary edition of Partecipazione e Conflitto will examine the state of contentious politics today and reflect on its future developments in our societies. After 10 years of publishing innovative articles on myriad aspects of contentious politics, political participation, and grassroots mobilizations in Europe and beyond, our anniversary edition will look to the future, starting from the actors, spaces and themes that characterize political, economic, social, and cultural conflicts today. With this aim in mind we are looking for original contributions based on sound empirical work that reflect on potential future developments related to the manifold ways in which grassroots groups seek to change societies – or to resist certain changes in the societies they inhabit. Particular attention will be devoted to ‘space’ and ‘time’ as contextualizing aspects of conflicts, two dimensions that are often neglected by existing research. In addition to Europe, the special issue aims at shedding light on conflicts in other regional contexts, such as Africa, Asia, North America, South America and Australia.

Scholarship on contentious politics has a long tradition of illustrating, analysing and explaining movements for change. A common finding in this work is that movements innovate from their previous experiences of contentious action. Although the challenges that societies face today (for example new environmental and labour conflicts, the conquest of formal power by the far-right) appear novel in many respects, opposition and change will continue to grow and develop from grassroots contention in the present, even where change stems from outright rejection. Article proposals should thus build on empirical work on present day movements for change as the basis for reflections on future paths.

We welcome article proposals presenting original empirical research conducted through single-case or comparative multinational perspectives focusing on the following lines of inquiry and, when it is the case, their mutual interactions

• environmental conflicts related to climate change, extractivism, land grabbing
• labour conflicts, trade unionism and radical labour struggles
• populism(s) and populist movements
• far-right activism and hate movements
• struggles on religion, religious identity, secularism
• ethno-national conflicts
• contentious politics on migration, mobility and citizenship
• struggles over new forms of imperialism
• conflicts on gender issues, intimacy rights and LGBTQ issues
• communication rights, media activism and alternative media
• pacifism, peace movements and anti-war mobilizations

• Acceptance of Long Abstracts 5th May 2018
• Submission of Full Articles: 30th September 2018
• Provision of peer review feedback: 30th October 2018
• Submission of revised articles: 20th November 2018
• Publication of the Special issue: 15th December 2018

Articles should be no longer than 10,000 words, including notes and references. A maximum of 10 articles will be published.
