Lecturer in Sociology – Department of Sociology

National University of Ireland Maynooth

The Department of Sociology has been instrumental in bringing new programmes into being, contributing to teaching and learning across the Faculty and demonstrating our capacity to work collegially with other Departments. More recently, Sociology has been at the forefront of curriculum and research developments, contributing, for example, to the conceptualisation and implementation of the new Curriculum Initiative and to the development of University-wide research clusters. The Department is committed to offering several core and elective modules on the new Criminology programme which will be offered as part of the BA Arts programme from 2017-18. The Department is now seeking to recruit to a key academic post designed to contribute to the core teaching programme in Sociology and to the new Criminology programme.

The Role

Maynooth University is committed to a strategy in which the primary University goals of excellent research and scholarship and outstanding education are interlinked and equally valued.

We are seeking an excellent academic to join our staff as a Lecturer in Sociology to support the delivery of the existing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by the Department and to support the BA Criminology which will be offered for the first time in 2017. Candidates should have an expertise in sociology which complements the Department’s existing strengths as well as a specialism in a field where sociology, law and criminology intersect. Candidates should also have experience of teaching social research methods.

The person appointed will have a proven record of teaching, research and publication, appropriate to career stage. He/she will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching mission of the Department and undertake teaching duties on the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as the supervision of Master’s and PhD students. The appointee will be expected to build a strong research profile that supports the University’s research strategy, including affiliating to the Research Institutes, where appropriate, and working with colleagues on national and international research. The appointee will be expected to sustain and conduct research, engage in scholarship of quality and substance, and generate publications of international standard.
