The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the Departments in the FMG. Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences. Research takes place under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), a multidisciplinary research institute, the biggest one of its kind in the Netherlands and possibly in Europe. The broad scope and pluralism of our education and research programmes are inspired by and reflect  a strong degree of internationalisation.

The Programme groups ‘Health, Care and the Body’ (anthropology) and ‘Dynamics of Culture and Citizenship’ (sociology) form  two cohorts of researchers that pay considerable attention to health and care issues. Academics from these programme groups alongside researchers from other disciplines collaborate in various interdisciplinary centres, including the Centre for Social Science and Global Health, one of the UvA’s research priorities. Recently the Academy of Long-term Care is being developed within the AISSR. The Academy for Long-term Care conducts research in collaboration with private and public institutions which provide long-term care in the Netherlands.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology currently has openings for Three Assistant / Associate Professors in the Sociology or Anthropology of Health and Long-term Care.

The new assistant /associate professors are currently expected to spend 60 percent of their time on teaching and 40 percent of their time on research. The research of these junior professors will take place under the aegis of the Academy of Long-term Care and be associated with the Center for Global Health. This Academy will be involved in social science research using anthropological and sociological methods and will have a strong empirical and theoretical character. The results will provide input for new care concepts at the macro, meso and micro levels, leading to new models for long-term care. The Academy of Long-term Care has currently three main lines of research, namely i) Long-term Care and Dementia, ii) Citizenship and Care, and iii) Long-term Care for People with Disabilities.
