Serve and represent the world’s largest humanitarian network

Secretary General

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest volunteer-based humanitarian network. It was founded in 1919 in the aftermath of World War I. Its aim is to support National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies developing their capacity to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable people in their countries. Assistance is provided by members of the IFRC without discrimination, with impartiality as to nationality, race, religious belief, class or political opinion. The IFRC currently has 187 members. Reaching 150 million people each year, the IFRC carries out relief operations to assist refugees and people affected by disasters and health emergencies. It is responsible for the worldwide mobilization of resources and supports Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies in leading development programmes to reduce vulnerability and promote human dignity at community level.

To head the Secretariat in its main location in Geneva, Switzerland, the IFRC is seeking candidates for the post of Secretary General. The Secretary General will provide strategic leadership and vision for the whole movement to prepare the IFRC for challenges ahead in a rapidly changing environment. S/he has the overall responsibility for directing and managing the activities of the IFRC. Ensuring effectiveness and high performance of the Secretariat team will be at the heart of the Secretary General’s role.

Candidates will be energetic, results-orientated and mission-driven. A gifted communicator and partnership builder, s/he will bring an excellent track record in leading one or more highly complex and diverse international organisations. A clear commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement will be required and the ability to effectively cooperate with all relevant stakeholders.
