Serve and represent the world’s largest humanitarian network

Secretary General

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest volunteer-based humanitarian network. It was founded in 1919 in the aftermath of World War I. Its aim is to support National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies developing their capacity to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable people in their countries. Assistance is provided by members of the IFRC without discrimination, with impartiality as to nationality, race, religious belief, class or political opinion. The IFRC currently has 187 members. Reaching 150 million people each year, the IFRC carries out relief operations to assist refugees and people affected by disasters and health emergencies. It is responsible for the worldwide mobilization of resources and supports Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies in leading development programmes to reduce vulnerability and promote human dignity at community level.
