Academic Position

Applications are invited for two probationary (tenure-track) appointments in the area of Sociocultural Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Social Science, Western University at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2018 or as negotiated. If qualifications and experience warrant a higher rank, consideration may be given to an appointment at the Associate Professor (probationary or tenured) or Professor (tenured) level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Anthropology at Western is a four-field department with strong collaborative relations within the department, with other departments and programs on campus, and with the Canadian and international communities where we carry out research. We have doctoral- and masters-level graduate programs that consistently attract outstanding Canadian and international applicants. We offer a wide range of courses for undergraduate students, including rich experiential learning opportunities in all subfields.

We are seeking Sociocultural Anthropologists whose research and teaching areas complement the expertise of continuing faculty members in Sociocultural and Linguistic Anthropology, and who conduct ethnographically-grounded and theoretically-engaged research in any region of the world. The successful candidates will be able to enhance our strong research record and contribute to and further extend our ability to offer exciting learning opportunities to our undergraduate and graduate students.

To be considered for a probationary (tenure-track) appointment, candidates must: have a completed PhD degree in Anthropology; demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in research, including the ability to publish in the highest-quality journals and develop an externally-funded research program; provide evidence of a strong record of teaching at the postsecondary level; have contributed to academic and/or professional service; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

To be considered for a tenured appointment, candidates must: hold a PhD in Anthropology; provide evidence of research excellence through an outstanding record of internationally-recognized publication in the discipline’s leading journals based on innovative externally-funded research; demonstrate excellence in teaching, through strong course evaluations, teaching awards, graduate student supervision, and/or development of new academic programs; provide evidence of sustained contributions to scholarly service activities; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The successful candidates may be able to benefit from and further strengthen existing collaborations with campus partners such as the Centre for Research on Migration and Ethnic Relations, Centre for Environment and Sustainability, Inter-Faculty Linguistics Program, Centre for Transitional Justice, Africa Institute, Institute for Social and Economic Policy Research, Global
